Abstract

This study investigates the taxonomy, phylogeny and biogeography of land snails in the genus Figuladra Köhler and Bouchet, 2020. Current understanding of the higher-level relationships and biogeography of the eastern Australian Camaenidae cannot progress without better knowledge of this fauna. Figuladra is a genus of camaenid land snail endemic to Queensland that has been greatly impacted by climate-induced reduction of mesic habitat and more recently, habitat loss through land clearing and anthropogenic fire regimes. These ‘hadroid’ (large, often striped) snails inhabit dry rainforests (vine thicket) and open woodlands of south-east, southern-central and mid-eastern Queensland. Figuladra has not been studied in depth previously and as a result, many anomalies existed in the identity and distribution of species due to the historical reliance on shell morphology that is highly variable within the genus. A further confounding issue was the incomplete provenance of Figuladra species described 150 years ago with little or no locality data, missing or confused type material in a number of museums across the world and often misleading images in early literature. These anomalies were resolved prior to undertaking a detailed and comprehensive revision of Figuladra. [...]
