Abstract
With Australia’s mental health support needs increasing, non-government serviceproviders are in high demand to deliver community-managed mental health support services. Despite this demand, there is limited research into the features of the community-managed mental health workforce, particularly in relation to career pathways, professional development opportunities and effective recruitment and retention strategies to support the growth of this industry. In 2013 and 2014, the Queensland Government funded 19 scholarships for the Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Practice or Master of Mental Health Practice at Griffith University in Queensland. The intention of the scholarships was to contribute to the development of the community-managed mental health workforce through the provision of university qualifications. By supporting the enhancement of mental health skills and knowledge in the sector the scholarships have a threefold purpose: maintaining the commitment and desire of people to work in the sector, attracting skilled individuals, and supporting quality service provision to people with poor mental health.
