Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people die by suicide at 7 times the rate of their non-Indigenous peers, yet there is little evidence of effective strategies to reduce this gap. A key reason for this limited evidence base is that the distinct risk and protective factors for suicide experienced by First Nations young people have received little research and little application within suicide prevention initiatives. Research on culturally-specific protective factors is notably absent.
