Abstract
The charitable sector provides critical services to millions of people worldwide, many of whom are in vulnerable circumstances. Social issues persist and grow despite substantial investment into activity across the charitable sector. The failure to close gaps, which have persisted across decades, suggests that more focus on how investments are realised into outcomes and impact may be needed. Adopting impact measurement approaches offers a path to ensure that investments are focused. Impact measurement identifies the activities that realise outputs capable of delivering positive and intended outcomes, which, with time, accumulate to achieve social impact. Three case studies are offered to demonstrate how charities can map their impact. Social impact pathways align activities and outputs with outcomes allowing contributions to any resulting social impact to be examined and learnings from one program to be shared with other programs. The utilisation of social impact pathways ensures that everyone can clearly understand the links between activities, outputs, outcomes and the contribution each line of effort has towards the delivery of outcomes that, with time, accumulate to achieve impact.
