Abstract

The bond market has developed significantly over the last few decades. Bonds have become an increasingly reliable funding source for governments and corporations. Recent developments show that the bond market is increasing continuously, both in terms of its size and penetration. Even during the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world economy was experiencing a significant downturn, the bond market showed positive growth, helping to provide funds to address these crises. Despite this noteworthy development of the bond market, research into the association between the bond market and economic development is relatively limited in comparison to research on the relationship between the banking and equity market and the economy. For this reason, this thesis examines the relationship between the bond market and economic growth. More specifically, it investigates the bond-growth nexus from three interrelated dimensions, which give rise to three empirical studies. [...]
