Abstract
Introduction Special events provide important social and recreational opportunities for local communities. They are associated with additional demand for destination goods and services generating increased sales, jobs, income and investment and export opportunities. Given their relevance to national identity and pride, destination image and branding (Marzano and Scott, 2006), they form a fundamental component of the tourism development strategy in many destinations (Jago and Dwyer, 2006).
