New employment arrangements such as app-based gig work are on the rise in the post-welfare society. Non-existence of relevant policy or hastened legislative responses leaves gig workers in a vulnerable position. In many developed countries, gig labour is predominantly migrant labour. The post-migration context challenges the career development of global south migrants. App-based gig work facilitates entry for migrants into the labour market of global north countries of resettlement and also comes with challenges that disrupt their long-term career development. Access to both decent work and migration are human rights. Attending to the sustainable career development needs of migrants not only enhances their lives but also improves the outcomes of host countries migration programs. This presentation considers the intersections of migration, gig work and sustainable career development for migrants, potential avenues for career research, and how emancipatory career counselling can support migrant gig workers.
