Abstract
The entry concerns the greatest and most famous actor China has ever produced, namely Mei Lanfang (1894-1961). It discusses his career, his influence on the art of Peking Opera (jingju), the relationship of art to the politics of the time, and his several trips abroad, including to the United States, Japan and Europe. It also discusses the impact he created on Western images of China.
