Abstract

In the face of a number of potentially explosive issues, the media portrayed the February by-elec tions in Queensland as ripe for yet another protest vote to be delivered to the major parties. For the Beattie Labor Government, a loss in either seat would have reduced it to minority status in the Parlia ment and forced it to rely on the support of one or more Independents.
