Abstract

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is one of the major direct causes of maternal morbidity and mortality. Secondary PPH is defined as excessive bleeding 24 h to 6 weeks post-partum. Whilst secondary PPH is usually caused by endometritis or retained products of conception, a uterine artery pseudoaneurysm was the causative factors in this case report. Uterine artery embolization was the therapeutic intervention chosen to preserve this woman's fertility and avoid a hysterectomy. This case presentation raises awareness for this rare cause of secondary PPH. Furthermore, RANZCOG guidelines demonstrate a paucity in local literature and in centres without local experience, this may lead to a missed opportunity to intervene with a fertility sparing option.
