Abstract

Research Background: 'Artist as Witness' is a collaborative project between myself and Griffith University fine artist Dr Julie Fragar examining how criminal adjudication can be witnessed and represented in the medium of painting, and how the perspective of the outside witness can enhance public understanding of legal processes. Research Contribution (including innovation and new knowledge): The artist and I have been in conversation and collaboration since 2017 when she contacted me after the exhibition of her first set of Trial Paintings (2017). My conversations with her about the formal conventions of the criminal courtroom, the genre of true crime, and the critiques of adversarialism, underpinned and informed the artist's turn, in her next exhibition, towards exploring the five figures of the judge, jury, accused, deceased and barristers. The exhibition Next Witness comprising five paintings is currently showing at the Sarah Cottier Gallery, and the essay catalogue (attached) contains a reflective essay written by me. Research Significance (evidence of excellence) This project was funded by a $15,000 collaborative grant from the QCA (2017). The five paintings will be exhibited, alongside my catalogue essay, at the Supreme Court of Queensland in 2019. My longer academic essay based on the project is forthcoming at the International Journal for the Semiotics of Law (2019).
