A major problem facing academics is how to prepare graduates who are able to use theoretical knowledge to become independent critical thinkers ready for the workforce and career and life changes. This presentation explores the theoretical background to the development of a web-based Template for an Interdisciplinary Critical Thinking Tool (TICTT). The template is based on an educative eclectic model that incorporates concepts from problem-based learning, cognitive apprenticeship and critical thinking. Using these concepts the template's design re-apprentices the learner to develop their contextual knowledge and compare this to expert ways of knowing. The template is flexible enough to be used in a number of teaching contexts and disciplines. The tool integrates a front-end editor so as to facilitate personal case authoring by academic staff, scaffolds student learning and provides model, contextual, expert input. The template also provides a sophisticated tracking system to monitor and aid students' learning.
