Abstract

The use of women or woman in this chapter includes all representations of female gender identities. Furthermore, we recognize and acknowledge that gender is more than a biological attribute; it encompasses the effects of socialization and social ordering, leaving gender as an unfixed identity (Marshall 1994; Ren and Caudle 2020) . The notions of femininity and masculinity are shaped by culture, values and social institutions (Acker 1990; Connell 2002; West and Zimmerman 1987) . We approach this chapter as an empowered and collective group of women with our own experiences and expertise through our work in the academy. We realized that not only do we have a vested interest in women’s experiences in academia, but we embodied many of those experiences, specifically through the narratives of our own lived experiences.
