Abstract

In this chapter we begin by introducing some current and historical feminist literature and theorizations of women’s work in academia. We approach this chapter as an empowered and collective group of individuals, each with our own experiences and expertise through our work in the academy. We realized that not only do we have a vested interest in women’s experiences in academia but that we embodied many of those experiences, specifically the narratives from our own lived experiences. In this conceptualization, our understanding of and relation with narratives of academic women’s experiences is informed by the work of Clandinin (2013), who frames narratives through processes of inquiry; knowledge that is ‘personal, practical, shaped by, and expressed in practice’ (9). Drawing on current research literature, we found that our experiences are not only occurring locally but also have similarities to the experiences of other academic women across the globe. Furthermore, from the earliest conceptions of this edited book, together we have evidenced that gendered experiences are clearly impacting on the lives of academic women at all stages of their careers.
