Abstract
In 2013, just the site-based activities of the construction sector contributed between three and ten per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) globally. When the broader supply network is included, this contribution increases to 10 to 30 per cent of a country's GDP (Hampson et al., 2014). Up to 80 per cent of the whole-of-life cost associated with built environment assets is incurred during the operational phase (buildingSMART, 2010). This chapter takes the whole-of-life asset management view of procurement proposed by Sanchez and Hampson (2016). Based on this approach, asset procurement and management starts at the strategic planning phase and ends with the operations and decommissioning phase.
