Abstract
International organizations that advocate for the education of young adolescents, such as the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) based in the United States and Adolescent Success based in Australia, call for specially qualified teachers who understand the unique nature and needs of this age group regardless of the school level or grade configuration. This chapter highlights the importance of adolescence as a unique period of development that requires intentional approaches to curriculum and pedagogy and, thus, training. It then introduces the 15 case studies from 11 different countries around the world as well as a glossary of common terms used throughout the text.
