Abstract

The purpose of this evaluation is to provide feedback, to the designers, of user opinion and appreciation of the Sonic Gathering Space (SGS) installation in the Alumni Courtyard of the RMIT campus.

The intent was that opinions would be sought from people who utilized, or passed through, the Alumni Courtyard in the RMIT grounds and who, otherwise unsolicited, responded to small signage on the installation inviting them to undertake the survey. Users would also include those who were invited by others (primarily RMIT staff) to visit the installation as part of a class, or otherwise, to experience and evaluate the SGS.

The population from which the unsolicited responses was drawn is primarily that of the inner-city RMIT University campus - but would also include that in the neighbourhood who might have chosen to pass through the campus on foot. Unfortunately, the latter numbers were severely constrained. COVID-19 restrictions had resulted in locking the public access gate from the Alumni Courtyard to Russell Street, resulting in limited pedestrian traffic through the Alumni Courtyard from the beginning of the SGS survey until 01-12-2022.
