Brief interventions are practices designed to motivate individuals exhibiting at‐risk behaviors that negatively affect mental, emotional, and physical health. They generally occur over a short period of time and are not intended as a cure or treatment, but rather to motivate or explore the possibility of positive change. Traditionally, such practices are used in medical environments, often to address trauma or substance use. In this chapter, the authors review the literature on student school‐based brief interventions to reduce student violence, with an emphasis on those programs that exhibit best practices elements. They outline the ways in which practitioners can better investigate these programs in order to determine the costs, benefits, and effectiveness of such programs.
