The suicide of a famous Argentine businessman very well-connected with the government, in 1998; the political crisis of the Argentine Senate as a result of accusations of corruption, in June 2000; or the murder of a woman from the Argentine bourgeoisie, in 2001, are news that seem to have nothing in common. However, when carefully studied, the three cases have been used by the Argentine media to construct a captivating discourse interested in narrating and describing a chaotic and anarchic society. Exemplifying with articles written about the suicide of Alfredo Yabran and the murder of Maria Marta Garcia Belsunce in the three most important newspapers from Buenos Aires, this paper aims at: (1) studying how this discursive practice allowed the national media to maintain these stories during several months in order to increase their sales (deeply affected by the end of the '90, due to a severe economic crisis), and (2) exploring how the press used this discourse to incorporate forms of distrust in the country's social and institutional relations.
