Abstract

Professor Brendan Mackey and Melissa Jackson from Griffith University visited Vanuatu in November 22-28, 2019 as part of the final stages of the Tanna Safehouses project. The aims of this visit were: 1. To assess the current functionality of the systems; 2. To deliver community training in basic use and maintenance of the solar power systems, helping ensure that once fixed they are not subjected to misuse and to increase the longevity of the assets; 3. To brief key stake holders including the National Department of Energy, Tafea Provincial Government and Tanna Council of Chiefs on the project’s status and progress and to discuss the need for establishing governance arrangements, local suppliers and community capacity building as a critical part of the success of small-scale remote area power supplies (RAPS). The following provides an overview of progress against each of these aims.
