Abstract

Research background: Collaboration between wind orchestra, visual imagery and spoken word. This work includes texts taken from Martin Luther King Jr's speeches on racial equality. I organised for this performance to have the speech excerpts read by an African American actor, speaking from a pulpit (modeled after historical photos) and with photographic backgrounds to elicit time and place.

Research contribution: The performance used existing knowledge in a new and creative way so at generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings by taking existing source material (Joseph Schwantner's 'New Morning for the World') and adding a performance element for live performance. Also added visual element of historical photos not originally intended for this work.

Research significance: Public performance at QCGU, which was part of the Australian National Band and Orchestra Conference (ANBOC). Peer reviewed.
