Abstract
During the 1890s, 13 rural communes, with over 2,000 participants, formed in Queensland. Perhaps the most unusual of these was 'Protestant Unity', near Pomona, whose members seemed to do their best to be non-communards. Nevertheless, one can argue that 'Protestant Unity' was the most successful of Queensland's nineteenth century communes because it contributed to the development of a successful farming area and the current town of Pomona.
