Abstract

This chapter explores the academic interviewees’ experiences and perceptions relating to the erosion of professionalism in academic work. Characteristics of academic professionalism are described by the interviewees as including the pursuit of truth and new knowledge-generation, humane selfless service, concern for students, and collegial and shared values. These characteristics were all perceived by the interviewees to be disappearing from academia. Aligned with this, academics’ esteem value, academic identity, academic freedom, and academic autonomy are considered undermined in this changing university work environment, and some academics in Australian universities report experiencing intimidation, bullying, mistrust, and harassment. The sharing of personal stories through the academic voice in this chapter provides insights into the occurrence of the erosion of academic professionalism.
