Abstract
This culminating chapter brings together insights and suggested ways forward, based on the intersection of the historically informed knowledge that has shaped the culture of academia, in combination with the lived experiences of 16 Australian academics who have shared their experiences. The development of the Academic Predicament Model and the revelation of the complex changes impacting the work of academics provide a platform for thinking about the future shaping of academia. In essence, the academics seek a conducive work environment in Australian universities.
Since the completion of the research study in September 2019, universities all around the world have experienced an unprecedented paradigm shift and a turnaround in their mode of delivery and policies, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pre-pandemic, participants aspired to eliminate disruptive elements affecting academia, and for these to be replaced by healthy, interactive communication among academic staff, and a more conducive work environment.
With the pandemic and the opportunity for innovative disruption, the potential for transformation has never been greater, as has the risk that elements of the Academic Predicament Model will be amplified and academic de-professionalising might be further accelerated. This chapter considers this as a unique moment in time.
