Abstract
In March-April 2019, during concert preparations in Seville, Spain, I made recordings of Diego Montes as he discussed his interpretation of a classical work. Later back in Brisbane, invited by the same performer, I started composing a work for Bass Clarinet and electronics, for the EVIMUS festival in Germany. The materials for the fixed-media component were sourced from the conversations in Seville, and later on I included a recording of texts in Sanskrit read by Dr Charulatha Mani.
The artistic quest was to situate and manifest artistic playfulness against a backdrop reflecting the cyclical collapses of universes and their rebirth, as hinted in the narration from the Bhagavad gita. A rich and dynamic manipulation of acoustic spectra and aural spaces was utilized in the processing of the clarinet and the voices. I used a wide array of digital resources for this, over a long period of experimentation. The outcome is a highly expressive, dynamic, evocative and alluring work, placing the clarinettist in a leading role of the sonic and almost theatrical context of an electroacoustic performance.
Although the festival was postponed due to the pandemic, the composition was enthusiastically received and recorded in stereo rendering by the soloist. Potential performances are currently weighted, and receiving evaluation from Italian-Japanese label DaVinci.
