Abstract
Motor difficulties, including motor deficits and impairments, commonly co-occur in autism, with a variety present in many autistic children from a young age. However, globally, movement difficulties are poorly recognised in children who receive an autism diagnosis, affecting timely assessment and services for motor difficulties for many autistic children. Movement difficulties are closely associated with characteristics of autism, severity levels of the condition, and co-occurring intellectual disability. Moreover, they are related to reduced functional abilities and decreased physical activity in autistic children. These impacts highlight the need for services, such as physiotherapy, that provide early identification, assessment, and management of movement difficulties in autism. Clinically, physiotherapists identify, assess, and manage movement differences in neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism, yet limited research on physiotherapy assessment of movement difficulties in autism exists. The aim of this study is to establish the level of assessment of movement difficulties in young autistic children, by physiotherapists in clinical practice in Australia.
