Abstract
This article provides a concise summary of current physical activity and exercise recommendations for older people with a focus on the skeletal and muscular systems. The article begins with a brief review of the determinants of bone and muscle health and the effect of aging on those tissues. The article then draws on the latest physical activity guidelines and relevant position statements to provide direction for individual exercise prescription for older people. Evidence-based approaches to enhancing tissue-specific health of bone and muscle are addressed and efficiencies in exercise prescription are considered in terms of overall health benefits and the prevention of falls and fractures.
