Abstract

Increasing number of companies face tougher environmental regulations and legislations in global markets. In particular, manufacturing industry becomes more competitive and the level of competition is very high both in national and international markets. The conventional procurement and supply chain management is based upon the triple standards of quality, cost and delivery. However, these standards are no more adequate for manufacturers to cope with high level of environmental regulations such as EU RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE(Wastes of Electrical and Electronic Equipment). The important factor, 'environment' is required for additional standard for procurement and supply chain management in manufacturing industry. This paper discusses supplier selection and participation into new product development from a procurement and supply chain management perspective. The study finds that it is necessary for the buyer to establish selective and strategic relationship with suppliers in electronics industry. That is, technology standard and capacity, quality, cost and trust may be the critical factors for establishing strategic partnership between buyer and suppliers. It implies that having strategic partnership gives much more competitive advantage for buyer(manufacturer) beyond tough environmental regulation dominant markets including EU and North America.
