Abstract
Pavlidis uses the lens of innovation to examine the development of roller derby as an international sport, primarily for women. In particular this chapter examines the emphasis on athlete governance and how this has influenced gender policies in the sport. Analyzing official policies, as well as commentary and the history of the sport, the chapter provides an overview of the various innovations in derby, including its links to music, art and other popular cultural forms. In the chapter Pavlidis argues that roller derby is the site of many important social, cultural and organizational innovations that other sport and leisure organizations can learn from. Through taking an innovation lens to roller derby, key tensions are revealed between the need for progressive, inclusive policies, and organizational norms that restrict meaningful change.
