Abstract
Flooding causes significant loss of life, injury, and economic harm. Driving into floodwaters is an often avoidable cause of injury and death. In addition, resources and rescuers’ lives are risked through the act of coming to the aid of those in need of rescue. This report details research undertaken in the Newcastle region of New South Wales (NSW). The research explores why people do and do not drive into urban floodwaters. It seeks to provide the NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) with insight into how the City of Newcastle Unit's volunteers can better encourage the local community to avoid driving into urban floodwaters.
