Abstract

This research investigates the relationship between yoga, playwriting and Romani culture to inform the realisation of a written dramatic work - Magpie. The work is based on my experience as a female playwright and yoga practitioner of Romani origin and explores finding the individual voice through themes of identity, personal truth and belonging. Historically, yoga has undergone a process of adaptation to adjust to changing societal circumstances and cultural traditions. However, there is limited evidence of the systematic application of the eightfold path of yoga as a structure for playwriting. This autoethnographic, practice-led research project investigates the relationship between yoga and playwriting to explore aspects of Romani culture from personal and anecdotal experiences. The research further explores how this relationship can be harnessed to write a dramatic text for theatre. Specific yoga principles and practices were applied throughout this research to stimulate a state of flow, which was fed directly into the playwriting process. Journal writing was concurrently undertaken as a means of reflecting on both the playwriting process and the emerging content, directly informing and guiding the developing dramatic work. This study offers a new framework for scholarship on playwriting and, by extension, the field of creative arts. The investigation contributes to the growing field of research into the application and effectiveness of yoga while offering a unique approach to the process and practice of playwriting.
