Abstract
At a time of extraordinary local and global upheaval, bringing attention to our own collective well-being might seem indulgent but it is essential for how we face the challenges ahead. Right now, in the aftermath of the pandemic, these are unprecedented times as we face economic pressures, growing inequalities, climatic changes, natural disasters, armed conflict and geo-political divisions. Emerging evidence shows impacts on well-being at local levels are disastrous, characterised by widespread uncertainties and fear that exacerbate inequities and intensify vulnerabilities. For example, the Global Wage Report 2022–2023 showed real wages have dropped substantially across the world despite rapidly rising inflation rates (International Labour Organization, 2022). Population well-being indicators point to increased mental health problems. For example, the World Health Organization (2022) reports a massive 25 percent increase in anxiety and depression worldwide. Demand on social and health services outstrips the existing capacity. These conditions look unlikely to ease quickly. To respond successfully to these challenges will require us to have a level of well-being that feeds our resilience and strengths to support others. Social work has a core interest in supporting people’s well-being; it is fundamental to how we work with people in their natural, institutional and cultural contexts. It is foundational and critical to coping and fulfilment.
