Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore first year business students’ view about using ePortfolios at Griffith University and examine how the use of ePortfolios in the business curriculum can improve first year student perceptions of work readiness and employability. This research is significant as it is directly linked to the student experience of enhancing student employability and providing career support to prepare career-ready graduates with the capacity to play an influential role in the world. While some of the literature claims that links exist between ePortfolios in the curriculum, work readiness and employability, research in this area is underdeveloped. This research aims to build on previous research and provide a richer view in the areas of work readiness and employability when it comes to the use ePortfolios in the business curriculum. This research employs Nahapiet and Ghoshal's (1998) theoretical framework of social capital which includes three main albeit interrelated components: structural, relational and cognitive. Structural speaks of a system of impersonal links between people and units and how these relations operate as one whole. Relational refers to the types of relationships and bonds people have with each other which is informed by social needs and motives such as approval and sociability. The Cognitive component relates to shared interpretations and meaning making among players. As such, languages, codes and narratives are main drivers. This research uses a qualitative case study methodology of semi-structured interviews. The research will consist of 20 semi-structure interviews with first year students from a large foundation course, 1001EHR Work and Employability. The recordings of the interviews and focus groups will be transcribed and a thematic content analysis will be performed using NVivo. This research has the capacity to improve the student experience and further engage students in the area of work-readiness and employability through exploring the use of ePortoflios in the business curriculum.
