Abstract

Rugby League Linguistics

Research Background: Many aspiring popular artists have begun to diversify their styles of music production so as to develop new avenues to draw income. In the past, the music I produced has been for commercial release and as such I competed against commercial productions. This is a very competitive field. Therefore, I have diversified my practice as a songwriter and producer toward the production of comedy records that use rugby league as a source of influence. Sports is massively popular, and the market audience potential is prolific. This research will include a series of releases to test the validity of the style transition. The first E.P of the Series “Rugby League Linguists” single releases occurred over the course of the past few years. The final song was completed in 2021 and the E.P fully uploaded.

Research Contribution: This study informs the broad scope of literature currently available on the portfolio musician. Musicians are currently operating in interdisciplinary fields so as to find various ways to produce music and earn a living. This research is a practice-based investigation into popular music and informs practitioners of the possibilities of creative practice diversification. It also will inform the longevity that transitional approaches may require to develop a fan base.

Research Significance: “Rugby league linguistics” has been successfully launched and is for sale here: https://www.yatlabatla.com/music. Singles from the E.P have gained airplay from Channel Nine nationally as is evident with the Track “Doin an Hindy” and “The touchy Song” see: https://www.yatlabatla.com/videos The fact that the songs have gained airplay on national television over a period of years signifies the validity of the research approach and supports my diversification in creative practice.
