Abstract
This study explores the influence of cultural values on public demand for redistribution in East Asia by comparing developed and developing contexts. Using data from the Asian Barometer Survey and following existing classifications of cultural dimensions–long-term expectations, collectivism, conflict avoidance, and orientation toward authority–we find that cultural values significantly shape redistribution preferences. The results indicate that long-term expectations and collectivism are positively associated with support for redistribution, especially in developing countries and regions where economic inequality is more pronounced. Conversely, attitudes toward authority have a minimal impact on redistribution demand. Our findings suggest that cultural values remain influential despite modernization, contributing to diverse welfare approaches across East Asia. This study highlights the significance of cultural factors in welfare policies, offering insights into how East Asian societies uniquely navigate welfare expansion amid economic growth and cultural continuity.
