Abstract
Aims and Background: Aim of the quality project was to moderate and benchmark clinical-facilitator (CF) marking of Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSATs) during a CF workshop. The clinical placement team at a university in SEQLD were concerned during the Covid Pandemic, CFs may not be marking ANSATs in a consistent manner, with leniency and inconsistency of concern. Project description: A comprehensive student performance clinical scenario was developed by one of the academic team from a real case scenario. The clinical scenario was validated by four academics experienced in clinical assessment. The academics marked the ANSAT while reviewing the scenario, consensus marking was undertaken via teams with discussion to reach consensus. Prior to clinical-facilitator workshop all attending participants were forwarded a copy of the scenario with an ANSAT and requested to complete the ANSAT prior to the workshop so that we could discuss and moderate the marking. Discussion: There was minimal difference between the four academics marking and moderation however, there was some robust discussion around student performance. Interestingly some CFs said they found the marking process difficult and that they thought that the process to assess the scenario would have been easy. Others commented that they had completed the process quite easily but on discussion with other CFS and the academic staff they found that what they had marked was in some instances too lenient and in other areas too harsh. Conclusion: At the conclusion of this quality process, we agreed further education and benchmarking of ANSAT marking is warranted and that discussion around student performance and staff understanding of the ANSAT marking criteria for each year level would be beneficial annually. CF networking and support by the academic clinical team remains best practice to ensure clinical facilitators are consistent in their marking of student performance using the ANSAT.
