Abstract

Both growth failure (GF) and disability are concerning global health issues, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In 2020, 149.2 million children under the age of five were stunted (having a low height for their age), and 45.4 million were wasted (having a low weight for their height) (2). Similarly, disability affects over 1 billion people globally, with 80 per cent of disabled people residing in LMICs (3). As a result, identifying the most important determinants of disability and GF is critical. This will enable more focused policies and actions, as well as better budget allocation and effective prioritisation of risk factor prevention measures. Past studies have identified determinants including malnutrition, breastfeeding, caregiving ability, and inequalities (low wealth index, health insurance, fluid intake, rural areas, and mother's education). However, there is a shortage of recent studies that investigate the numerous causes of GF and disability through multivariate analysis across multiple countries (5). As a result, this study examines the extent to which these factors are associated with GF and disability using data from 173365 children under the age of five from 25 LMICs gathered by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in 2019. It is anticipated that the outcomes of the research will help to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ending undernutrition by 2030 and ensuring wellbeing for all (8). [...]
