As the saxophone is a comparatively new instrument to the woodwind family (b. 1846) it has enjoyed a relatively non-traditional experience in the context of classical music development. Therefore, traditional contexts such as performances with string quartet – long considered the icon of chamber music – are very rare. This performance and creative process explored the question “What are the stylistic possibilities available for the saxophone and string quartet?” with the sub-question “How can a traditional format combine with new forms of music making and communication?”. It was found that combining the foundational medium of Western classical music, the string quartet, with the most recent addition to the reed family has yet to yield a “standard” practice of saxophone quintet composition from any country or musical preference. The program included Adolph Busch’s neo-romantic Quintett for Alto Saxophone and String Quartet, followed by Australian Jeremy Rose’s hybrid Greek/gypsy-Balkan 1st movement of “Between Worlds”, and UK-born Michael Nyman’s rock-influenced “Shaping the Curve”. Added to the latter work was cross-disciplinary animation by Griffith University Film School Senior Lecturer in Animation, Dr. Louise Harvey. It was also found that the string quartet is well positioned to suit the saxophone across diverse styles and genres, revealing an opportunity to write more for this medium. This performance showcased rarely performed works in Australia.
