Abstract

Background: This exhibition was held at Sophie Gannon Gallery in Melbourne. The gallery is a commercial gallery established in 2006. I have been represented by SSG since 2008 and have had 6 exhibitions with them since then. This exhibition was also a part of the official program for the Melbourne International Photography Festival, Photo 2021.

Research Contribution: The exhibition included 12 new artworks that continued an ongoing research project as well as works that expanded upon my current research interests. Three works in the exhibition continued with my long form novel that combines autobiographic text that is hand cut from vernacular photographs. This project began in 2004 and currently consists of over 60 individual artworks. For this exhibition I also made 6 new photographic works that employed a process of encasing letters into a resin slab, to make photograms. It starts a process of attempting to represent language, narratives or dialogues as a physical force, that can be felt.

Significance: As mentioned the work was staged during Photo 2021 (https://photo.org.au/venues/sophie-gannon-gallery) which led to an increased interest in the exhibition. I was meant to deliver an artist talk on the opening weekend but had to cancel due to COVID restrictions. Two of the works were purchased by private collectors and I was offered an exhibition at Resi Arts Gallery in Collingwood in April 2022.
