Throughout the process of leisure engagement, people are exposed to various constraints which can affect their leisure preferences, inhibit their desire to undertake new leisure activities, reduce their enjoyment in leisure, and limit their full involvement in leisure (e.g., Jackson, 1990; Harrington and Dawson, 1995; Shaw, Bonen, and McCabe, 1991). It is important to understand the nature of these constraints, and the ways in which they operate throughout the leisure participation process. Previous research on leisure constraints has mostly been conducted using a monocultural and western conceptual framework although the researched populations often comprised people from diverse cultures. The leisure constraints of non-westerners, and in particular, of immigrants in a western society, are less understood. It could be expected that immigrants would face some unique patterns of leisure constraints due to racial and cultural differences (Clayworth, 1986; Falk, 1995). Moreover, their minority status within a powerful dominant culture could expose them to a broader range of constraints. This study sought to explore the leisure constraints perceived by Chinese immigrants in Australia Constraints associated with three types of leisure participation decisions were examined. These included the examination of (i) constraints that intervened in people's desire to take up new leisure activities, (ii) constraints that hindered people from starting new leisure activities in which they wished to participate, and (iii) constraints that caused people to reduce or to discontinue the leisure activities in which they participated. The study also examined the socio-demographic differences in the perception of constraints on leisure among the Chinese immigrants.
