Music and sport would appear to be opposite ends of the spectrum in many respects. In terms of the status awarded to sport in Australian society and in schools, music has considerable ground to make up. There are benefits to be gained from music harnessing some of the positive aspects of sport to elevate status, increase participation and provide improved funding opportunities. Examples of effective practice in exploring the complementary nature of the two activities are scarce, but isolated instances can provide useful illustrations for changing the score-line and improving the plight of music in relation to status and participation. The examination of new approaches at the micro level can assist teachers and students in bringing about change in more universal settings.
