Abstract
While many things have changed on the Gold Coast from its early days, some things have remained the same. Development and business interests are still very active in city administration, and local government is pro-business and growth. The sitting mayor, Tom Tate, has a background in the construction, tourism and hospitality industries and still owned the Islander Resort Hotel until very recently. The city’s local newspaper the Gold Coast Bulletin is no different than its predecessors in being decidedly pro-development (see Chapter 10). The city has great ambitions to grow and this is reflected in the projects pursued in the last decade.
