Abstract
The 2016 Aranayaka landslide forcibly displaced 513 families. The homes of 72 of these families were completely destroyed while the remaining homes were at significant risk of being affected by subsequent landslides and, as such, were resettled throughout the Aranayaka region. Drawing on 20 in-depth interviews with displaced and resettled families as well as government officials, this study explores the impacts of the resettlement on people’s livelihoods and barriers to livelihood recovery. The research identifies that the stability of families depends on their ability to continue previous livelihoods in new homes as resettlement means moving away from land that livelihoods are dependent upon. Aranayaka is a rural region in which the majority of livelihoods are subsistent and based on local knowledge and socio-economic networks. Key livelihood impacts included increased household expenses, reduced ability for subsistence, and declining income, as well as declining health and education access. New loans, lost socio-economic networks as well as lost traditional practices and lifestyles were the overarching barriers preventing livelihood recovery.
