Abstract
Older people are an increasingly diverse population, with variable characteristics such as culture, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and physical capabilities potentially influencing their participation in healthcare. In response, community health and aged care workers may need to increase knowledge, skills and uptake of knowledge into practice regarding diversity through appropriate training interventions. Diversity training (DT) programs have traditionally existed in the realm of business management, with little research attention devoted to scientifically evaluating the outcomes of DT programs directed at community health and aged care workers. A DT workshop has been developed for community health and aged care workers, with this study describing a formative evaluative framework for DT, and preliminary evaluative findings from three pilot workshops conducted in the state of Victoria, Australia. Key concepts from the literature on DT evaluation were identified and integrated into a framework, focusing on cognitive, affective and skill-based learning outcomes. A mixed-methods approach consisting of pre and post workshop surveys, semi-structured interviews and data from independent observers were used for the evaluation. T-tests showed no significant differences on pre and post workshop data for all three learning outcomes. Interviews with participants from the pilot workshops and independent observer ratings provided vital feedback relevant to the structure, content and delivery of the workshops that may have a larger impact on learning outcomes. These changes will be implemented in the national delivery of the DT workshops for the community health and aged care industry, with formal evaluations to be conducted in a subsequent study.
