Background: Welcome to the Dreamhouse is a large-scale creative work that consists of twenty photographs. These works explore the influence of the US on Australia’s own hypercommodified suburban fantasy and considers the ideological values, behaviours and capitalist underpinnings that are shared between the two nations. The work employs the suburban gothic and the manipulation of nostalgic commodified icons of suburbia as to disclose their neoliberal intent and embellishments. Research contribution: Central to the work is a neoliberal assessment of the power and position of commercialised imagery and objects and the ability they have to manufacture and instil national myths of egalitarianism and childhood narratives that ensure capitalist conformity and behaviours. Research Significance: The work has been exhibited in over fourteen national venues including regional art galleries including: Gympie Regional Art Gallery (QLD); Redland Art Gallery (QLD); Brisbane Powerhouse (QLD); and Perth Centre for Photography (WA), university art galleries: University of South Australia Art Gallery (SA) and Crane Arts Philadelphia (USA) and a number of the works have been curated into exhibitions at commercial galleries comprising two solos shows at Onespace Gallery Brisbane (2021 and 2018) and two group shows at M. Contemporary Sydney (2018). Several of the works have been successful finalists in national art awards such as: The Hutchins Australian Contemporary Art Award (2018); The Wyndam Art Prize (2017); Moreton Bay Region Art Award (2016); and the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award (2013).
