Abstract

Freshwater crayfish of the genus Euastacus are endemic to eastern continental Australia, where they occupy a variety of habitats, but typically in areas where stands of native vegetation persist (Coughran and Furse, 2010). In Queensland, most Euastacus have retreated to cooler, high altitude habitats greater than 300 m above sea level (a.s.l.) (Ponniah and Hughes, 2004), while in southerly states a more diverse assemblage of species occur in both high and low altitude habitats (Coughran and Furse, 2010; Coughran, 2013).
