Abstract

The relation between theory and practice in the education of professional workers seems to be a common concern amongst academics employed in higher education institutions. While professional fields such as psychology, social work, para-medical care, nursing, sports coaching and teaching appear to be diverse, they all share a common theory-practice concern. Questions persist within these professional schools around the right mix of theory and practicum work; when, where and how theoretical knowledge should be introduced; timing of theoretical knowledge in relation to practicum experience; and what types of theoretical and practicum experiences work best in the education of professionals.
