Abstract

Despite the iconic status of 'the family' in contemporary legal and political culture, 'family' is, increasingly, a slippery signifier. The archetypal family form is almost an anachronism, a vanished icon of an earlier age. Defended with increasing vehemence by traditionalist forces, including militant fathers' rights groups, it achieves its potency as an ideal against which contemporary family forms can be found sorely wanting.
