Abstract
This paper introduces an innovative interdisciplinary project that transforms public housing developments through community-supported ecosystems. By bringing together academia, design professionals, tenants, and state government agencies, the initiative addresses the critical challenges of social inclusion and belonging in public housing communities. At the core of this project is a commitment to participatory design. Residents actively co-created their living environments through workshops, focus groups, and collaborative design sessions, ensuring their voices, experiences, and aspirations shaped the outcomes. This approach yielded solutions that integrate both physical and social dimensions of housing, prioritising resident wellbeing and empowerment. The project demonstrates how design-led initiatives can catalyse positive social change when supported by government agencies. By bridging academic expertise with real-world challenges, it establishes a compelling model for developing vibrant, resilient communities within public housing. The interdisciplinary methodology emphasises holistic and inclusive design principles, highlighting the importance of cross-sector collaboration in addressing complex social issues. Beyond its immediate impact, this work provides valuable insights and best practices for future initiatives aiming to create inclusive, sustainable living environments in public housing. It makes a significant contribution to ongoing discourse in community development and social welfare, offering a replicable framework for similar projects worldwide.
