Abstract
Studies on commensality, traditionally defined as “eating with other people”, have significantly grown in numbers in recent years. This short paper uses the results of a systematic literature review to describe the complex links between commensality and social density in the context of tourism and hospitality. It reflects on how subjective perceptions of social density affects commensality, suggesting new links between the notions that could further the body of knowledge on social dynamics in food and beverage servicescapes.
